A chance encounter aboard the steamship Norden in the summer of 1900 sets the stage for a tale that swirls between cultures and curiosities. When the narrator strikes up conversation with a reserved English traveler, the ice quickly melts as the foreigner shares stories of his journeys through Finland’s countryside and introduces his wife, Surya Me, whose Indian heritage brings an unexpected splash of color to the northern landscape. Their brief meeting on the deck, punctuated by the child Darja’s bright eyes, leaves the narrator with a lingering sense of wonder about the “remarkable events” they recount.
The narrative then follows the Englishman’s own recollections of a childhood in a modest British town, his struggle to find his place in the medical world, and his eventual decision to leave London in search of new horizons. As he prepares for a departure to Calcutta, the promise of exotic festivals and unfamiliar customs beckons, hinting at adventures that will blur the lines between reality and the mystique of far‑away lands.
