Description

A determined Viennese traveler sets out in the early 1850s, intent on a second circumnavigation despite a modest inheritance and a modest government grant. Her journey begins with a protracted trek to London, where she records the bustling streets, the solemn Sunday services, and the marvel of the great industrial exhibition. The vivid diary entries capture both the grand scale of the metropolis and the intimate moments spent with friends in Prague and Hamburg before finally docking at the city’s famed harbor.

From the English capital she presses onward, aided by generous Dutch officials and grateful American captains who grant her free passages on steamers and sailing ships. The narrative moves through the Cape of Good Hope, the bustling port of Singapore, and the exotic jungles of Borneo before reaching the rice fields and temples of Java. Her observations blend curiosity about local customs with a keen eye for the natural wonders that define each locale, offering listeners a rich portrait of mid‑century travel and cross‑cultural encounter.
