Description

Archibold Masterman is a towering, self‑made contractor who has risen from day‑labourer to wealthy builder by his own relentless drive. Now in his fifties he has purchased the stately Eagle House in the exclusive suburb of Highbourne Gardens, a neighbourhood that still clings to the faint scent of old‑world gentility. Determined to cement his status, he adopts the trappings of respectability—new shirts, polished shoes, even a manicure—believing that appearance is the first step toward acceptance.

His first public statement of ambition comes at the local non‑conformist church, where he rents the most expensive pew and makes a conspicuous donation, instantly catching the eye of the town’s established merchants and manufacturers. The encounter with Loker, the soap magnate, and the quiet nods of other influential residents mark the beginning of Masterman's calculated social experiment. As he navigates the subtle politics of the garden’s elite, listeners will watch a man who has built skyscrapers now attempting to construct a reputation out of sheer will.
