Description

In a sleepy Maine town of the late ’90s, the Wescott family seems ordinary enough—four lively children, a diligent mother, and a respectable lawyer father. Yet every day from May through September, Mr. Wescott makes a peculiar entrance, strolling down the street with his freshly pressed collar and tie dangling from his left hand like a reluctant relic. The habit puzzles neighbors and fuels whispered speculation, from political loyalty to secret rituals, while the children watch with equal parts awe and bemusement.

Through Mary’s eyes, the story captures the subtle tensions of a household balancing public perception and private quirks. As the family prepares for an unexpected visit from the state governor, the father’s odd custom becomes a silent test of honor, loyalty, and the lengths a family will go to protect its reputation. The narrative blends gentle humor with a touching portrait of a small‑town family navigating the absurdities of tradition and the undercurrents of late‑century America.
