Marriage Inside Out
After a night at the theater, Shirley and Kent leave a comic performance about quarrelsome married life. Kent laughs at its broad jokes, but Shirley feels only embarrassment and unease, disturbed by the way the audience turns domestic unhappiness into entertainment. As they make their way through the crowded streets, she becomes increasingly aware of a divide between them—and of how easily her husband seems to fit into the confident, careless world around him.
Their marriage is only a year old, yet Shirley senses that something has shifted beneath its polished surface. Kent’s friendship with Henry Beech, a passing glimpse of a red-haired ticket seller, and the charged silence in the car all acquire a troubling significance as the couple drives into the night. With keen social observation and a quietly perceptive heroine, this story examines the private doubts, expectations, and unspoken resentments that can hide inside an apparently ordinary marriage.
