In the summer of 1785 the queen slipped from the gilded halls of Versailles and rode to Paris, veiled in an open carriage that turned the capital’s streets into a cheering sea. Accompanied by her three children, the Duchess de Polignac and a devoted nurse, she was greeted by throngs whose shouts of “Long live the queen!” rose like thunder above Notre‑Dame. The king stayed behind, urging her to savor the moment alone, while the people pressed close to catch a glimpse of the royal family that seemed, for a day, theirs as well.
The scene unfolds as a vivid portrait of a mother reveling in public love, cradling the infant Louis Charles and lifting him high for all to see. Her smile, the glow of her cheeks, and the joyous cries of the crowd paint a fleeting portrait of hope, even as the weight of future storms begins to stir beneath the jubilant surface.
