Description

In the bustling world of 19th‑century Paris, a talented young engineer named Pascal Divorne walks away from a promising career at the École des Ponts‑et‑Chaussées without explanation. His sudden resignation puzzles a circle of acquaintances who sense a hidden motive, while his prideful disdain for uniforms and government posts reveals a fierce desire for independence. As Pascal retreats from the expectations of society, his old schoolmate Eugène Lorilleux, a fledgling physician struggling to build a practice among the city’s cramped mansardes, steps back into his life.

Together they navigate the precarious balance between ambition and practicality, each confronting the limits of their talents. Pascal’s relentless confidence clashes with Eugène’s methodical patience, exposing both the allure and the danger of unchecked self‑belief. Their uneasy partnership hints at opportunities that could reshape their fortunes, if only they learn to recognize the rare moments destiny offers.
