In the sun‑lit plains beside the upper Ganges, the ancient Kuru kingdom braces for a clash that will echo through centuries. Two royal houses— the blind king Dhritarashtra and his brother Pandu— raise rival lineages, each blessed by a different deity. Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva grow under the tutelage of the formidable guru Drona, while the enigmatic Karna, a charioteer’s son claiming divine birth, arrives at a grand tournament to challenge the princes.
The opening act unfolds as the royal court stages a dazzling contest of skill and honor. Arjuna’s glittering arrows and Karna’s uncanny aim spark a rivalry as intense as any mythic duel, setting the tone for loyalties, pride, and destiny. Amid the pageantry, wise Vidura and stern Bhishma counsel the king, hinting at the deeper moral dilemmas that will soon surface.
Rendered in concise English verse, this translation preserves the rhythm of the original Sanskrit while making the epic’s larger-than-life characters and their dilemmas vivid for modern ears. Listeners are invited to experience the clash of duty and desire that defines one of India’s greatest storytelling traditions.
