In a quiet corner of Budapest’s “upper district,” a diligent student practices a Latin hexameter while the world drifts past the tidy hedges of a modest house. The rhythm of his recitation is interrupted by a fleeting rustle in a nearby garden, where a small, crimson‑faced figure slips a hidden note through a secret door. The student, curious and obedient, delivers the folded scrap to the mysterious recipient waiting beyond the foliage.
The note, a fervent love letter addressed to a young girl named Jolánka, bursts with restless passion and urgent pleas, its ink still warm with emotion. The girl, a delicate presence with golden hair and bright eyes, discovers the letter while gathering blossoms, and her trembling hands unfold the hurried words that reveal a secret romance shadowed by social constraints. As she folds the paper into tiny graves in the soft earth, the scene captures a tender moment of youthful longing against the backdrop of a serene, flower‑lined courtyard.
