Description

Lydia grows up in a rugged New York forest settlement, where a simple task of pulling wool from a sheepskin reveals a striking tenacity. Born in 1812 to a hard‑working New England family, she is the quiet‑voiced, fair‑haired daughter who never abandons a job until the last lock is pulled. Her parents, a prudent father and an ambitious mother, nurture a household of eleven children, instilling both diligent habits and a deep religious foundation that shapes Lydia’s character from an early age.

At fifteen, Lydia leaves the cabin for a boarding school, stepping into a world of buzzing classrooms, new friendships, and the subtle stirrings of youthful affection. There she encounters Calvin Bailey, a charismatic newcomer whose smooth manners contrast with the earnest community around her. As she navigates academic demands and burgeoning social ties, Lydia’s steadfast spirit continues to guide her, offering listeners a glimpse of a young woman whose early resolve promises to echo through her later days.
