A bitter, wind‑swept winter has sealed the remote monastery in old Karelia, where a band of monks struggles to keep their doors open and the hearth burning. Fresh snow blankets the courtyard, and the men, exhausted from a long pilgrimage, must clear the steps, stack firewood and heat each cold stone room before the night deepens. Their daily chores—shoveling, chopping, stoking the great ovens—are performed under an ever‑present sense of duty and a lingering dread of the unforgiving landscape outside.
Among them, an aging monk known as Ilja returns from a grueling journey, his presence both a relief and a source of tension. The brothers whisper about past clashes with the local Karjalans, recalling violent reprisals and uneasy alliances that still echo in their conversations. As they debate the next day's work, their humor and camaraderie mask an undercurrent of fear about what the frozen forest might bring, and whether the monastery can survive the harsh season ahead.
