Description

The journey to the diamond‑rich town of Kimberley begins aboard a rattling coach that crawls across sun‑scorched veldt, dust storms and rickety river fords. Inside, ten strangers share a cramped space, each eyeing the others with a mix of suspicion and weary anticipation. Among them is Kate Gray, a young English governess whose black dress and solitary demeanor betray a recent fall from genteel comfort after her father's failed ostrich venture left her penniless.

On the same coach rides the notorious Mr. Joe Aarons, a flamboyant jewel‑dealer whose sharp wit and shadowy dealings have made him both feared and admired in Kimberley. He is joined by the blunt‑spoken Mother Hemp, proprietor of a local canteen, and the respectable claim‑owner Mr. Bowker, who bristles at Aarons’ presence. Their clashing personalities turn the trek into a lively tableau of colonial ambition, humor, and underlying tension, promising an engaging portrait of life on the South African frontier.
