Description

The play opens with a lively prologue in which a witty narrator invites the audience to judge the beauty of the young heroine, Olimpia. He describes her as shy, almost virginal, preferring the quiet of a convent to the glare of public scrutiny, yet forced onto the stage by impatient observers. The speaker playfully exaggerates her virtues and flaws, urging listeners to look beyond surface ornaments and to treat her with both admiration and mischievous teasing.

In the first act we meet Olimpia’s household: her protective mother Sennia, a loyal servant squad, the pompous suitor Lampridio, and a cadre of comic figures such as the pedantic Protodidascalo and the earnest student Giulio. Their interactions spin a web of romantic pursuits, mistaken identities, and gentle satire of social pretensions. As the characters vie for Olimpia’s favor, the audience is treated to quick‑witted dialogue and bright physical comedy, setting the tone for a spirited Italian comedy that celebrates wit as much as beauty.

About the author

Giambattista della Porta

Giambattista della Porta

d. 1615

A restless Renaissance mind, he moved easily between science, theater, and the strange borderland where observation met wonder. Best known for writing about natural magic and optics, he helped shape early modern curiosity long before disciplines were neatly divided.
