Claude wanders the Paris night like a solitary painter, his thoughts drifting through the humid July air. A sudden storm forces him to sprint along the Quai de la Grève, the rain pounding the cobblestones as he seeks refuge in the attic of an old hôtel on the Île Saint‑Louis. When he finally reaches the low, iron‑bound door of his studio, a shivering young woman in black presses against the wood, her eyes wide with terror.
She claims she was abandoned after a train derailment near Nevers, pleading for a ride to Passy while the thunder roars around them. Claude, wary of her frantic tale, sees the scene as a possible prank but cannot ignore the desperation in her voice. Their uneasy pact to leave the rain‑soaked quay sets the stage for a night in which the city’s shadows may reveal more than either of them expects.

A fearless French novelist and journalist, he helped define literary naturalism with vivid, unflinching stories about ordinary lives. His work also made him a major public voice during the Dreyfus Affair, showing how literature and conscience could meet.
