A bleak autumn night presses against a solitary cottage at the edge of a Finnish village. Wind rattles the dry branches outside while snow and sleet swirl around the creaking walls, and inside, an elderly couple endures the storm in quiet routine. The husband, pipe in hand, watches the flame of a swinging lamp, and his wife tends a spinning wheel, their lives moving as slowly as the drifting clouds.
Their world revolves around a stout gray cat named Mirri and a tired cow that provides the only milk they can spare. Simple tasks—milking, feeding, and sharing a modest meal—anchor them, even as the harsh weather seeps into the floorboards and the night stretches long. Beneath the calm, however, linger memories of loss and fleeting dreams that flicker like the smoke from the pipe, hinting at deeper currents beneath the ordinary.
