A bustling household prepares for a celebratory dinner, but the kitchen’s two scheming servants are already plotting to turn the evening on its head. Jocrisse, a quick‑witted cook with a penchant for tall tales, and his cousin Laflûte, the ever‑busy sweeper, scramble to set the table, sharpen razors, and keep the master’s routine undisturbed—all while whispering about past disasters and a mysterious birthday banquet that could involve everyone.
Their banter is full of rapid jokes and frantic misunderstandings, as they try to anticipate the master’s guests and secure a spot at the feast. With a mirror, a soap‑scented razor, and a handful of anxious servants, the scene builds a lively, claustrophobic comedy that promises plenty of slapstick moments and clever wordplay, all before the first course even arrives.

A French-born teacher, lawyer, and playwright, he built a second life in Quebec and wrote lively stage comedies and dramas in French. His surviving works give a glimpse of 19th-century popular theater shaped by migration, reinvention, and a love of performance.
