Description

Set in the lively 1860s market town of Käkisalm, the story opens on a narrow street where a hat‑maker's shop faces a bustling tavern. Two university students, Niilo and Heikki, sit hunched over a tattered book, arguing about poetry, love, and the price of a hundred hats. Their chatter draws in a cast of colourful locals – a proud merchant, a young daughter named Leena, a travelling butcher, and even a Russian‑born laundress – all tangled in a comically earnest quest for honor and money.

The play mixes witty dialogue with a jaunty, song‑like rhythm, turning everyday worries into a miniature saga of ambition and desire. As the characters barter both goods and affection, they reveal the tensions between respectable society and the reckless poetic dreams of youth. Listeners will be treated to a bright slice of 19th‑century Finnish life, where humor and heartfelt longing walk hand in hand through the bustling streets of Käkisalm.

1841–1877

A Finnish poet, teacher, journalist, and translator, he is remembered especially for the lyric “Miks' leivo lennät Suomehen?”, later set to music by Erkki Melartin. His work grew out of 19th-century national feeling and a close eye for everyday life in Karelia and Viipuri.
