Description

Helen Carstairs, the only daughter of a powerful New York financier, finds herself on the deck of the Baltic as it pulls away from the White Star docks. Though the ocean breeze promises escape, she is haunted by the prospect of a year abroad, a plan she never truly wanted and a household now dominated by the flamboyant Mrs. Coxe, her father's new wife. The departure forces Helen to confront the uneasy mix of privilege, duty, and a lingering resentment toward the woman who has taken her place at family tables.

Back home, the Carstairs mansion hums with endless soirées, business gatherings, and the relentless expectations of a society that measures worth by connections. Helen’s love for her father’s achievements clashes with her yearning for something less scripted, and the looming voyage offers a chance to breathe beyond gilded corridors and rehearsed conversations. As the ship sets sail, she stands at the threshold between the familiar opulence of Fifth Avenue and the unknown horizons that might finally let her discover who she wants to become.
