Description

A bitter March freeze blankets the Finnish countryside as a retreating regiment makes its way toward Tampere. A wiry, nameless boy appears on a tired horse, demanding entry into the ranks. The seasoned corporal grants him a uniform and, after a quick haircut, the lads dub him “Karhu” for his bear‑like face and sturdy bearing.

Karhu proves himself a natural horseman, riding with daring balance that earns the soldiers’ quiet respect. Though he never joins their talk, he listens intently, especially when the men grumble about their commanders and the looming conflict. His solemn eyes darken whenever General Adlercreutz is mentioned, hinting at a depth beyond the boy’s stoic exterior.

When a courier from Häme arrives at the camp, Karhu’s calm is tested by a sharp exchange that leaves him pale and withdrawn. The moment sets the stage for a young soldier whose strength and silence may shape the fate of those around him.
