In a modest farmhouse that still smells of woodsmoke and potatoes, a hard‑working household gathers around a battered table piled with powder, scales and a rifle. The patriarch’s son, a restless youth eager to master the art of loading ammunition, bursts into song while the older servants exchange barbed jokes about danger and tradition. Their banter reveals a simmering tension between the older generation, wary of the new fervor for firearms, and the younger, who see preparedness as a duty to their nation.
As the family’s daughter steps in, proclaiming herself a “Lotta” and offering to help with the loading, the conversation turns to what it means to defend a homeland in uncertain times. The play captures the clash of old‑world caution with a rising, almost militant, sense of patriotism, all set against the everyday rhythms of rural life. Listeners are invited to hear how humor, pride and fear intertwine in a household poised on the edge of change.
