Description

A bustling rural courtroom opens the play, where Ilmola, a weary solicitor, shuffles papers while awaiting the arrival of the parties. The clerk Mari summons Vinkka, a straightforward tenant farmer, whose grievance centers on unpaid work hauling timber to a monastery. Opposite him stands Kela, the landowner accused of reneging on promises, while a self‑interested witness, Hutja, hangs on the periphery. The judge and his attendants preside over a scene that feels part legal drama, part folk comedy.

As the first act unfolds, Vinkka recounts his arduous five‑day trek delivering “taksvärkki” logs, insisting Kela owes him a proper wage. Ilmola probes the tangled language and vague agreements, trying to untangle who really promised what and whether the law will recognize a single testimony. The dialogue crackles with regional color, exposing the clash between rural labor and bureaucratic procedure. Listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of small‑town justice, where every word and witness could tip the balance.
