In the dimly lit salon of the cruiser Alma, the officer cadre gathers around a modest table, the sea beyond the portholes a quiet witness to a world on the brink. Commander Corlaix, newly promoted and burdened with responsibility, raises his glass to honor his crew, a mixture of seasoned sailors and nervous newcomers. The atmosphere crackles with a blend of camaraderie, provincial humor, and the weight of an uncertain future.
Through a rapid exchange of toasts, jokes, and half‑hearted protests, the men reveal their personalities: the flamboyant Birodart, the sharp‑tongued Brigadier Fergassou and the earnest Ensign D’Artelles. Beneath the banter, a secret mission looms, hinted at by the captain’s uneasy waiting for a telegram from Paris. The dialogue swells with military formality while the underlying tension suggests that peace may already be slipping away.
The first act ends with the crew poised on the edge of a decision that will test loyalty, duty, and the fragile hope that a safe harbor still exists. Listeners are invited to feel the claustrophobic intimacy of a ship’s interior as war inches closer.
