The narrative begins with a beautifully painted porcelain cup, its glaze dotted with violets, coccinelles and the emblem of two intersecting blue swords. Once part of a regal service owned by a queen, each piece meets a sudden ruin—one breaks in a burst of royal fury, another cracks under a trembling prince’s confession of love. These early calamities turn the cup into a quiet witness to the sweep of power, passion and the clumsy hands that shape history.
Later the surviving cup slips into the hands of an insurgent, is sold to a modest antique dealer, and eventually catches the eye of a well‑to‑do gentleman who purchases it as a gift for his distant cousin, the Marquise of Noirmoutier. The cup, now a cherished heirloom, is proposed as a wedding present for the young Irène, linking generations through a single fragile object. As it circles through parties, revolutions and intimate celebrations, the cup carries the echo of every era it has touched, reminding listeners that even the smallest artifact can bear the weight of a nation’s story.
