Description

A determined marquis of Baldissero finds himself drawn into a secret manuscript recovered from a painter’s home during a police raid. The pages, marked in red by a stern commissioner, contain a fiery treatise that challenges the existing order and imagines a future where the common people become a conscious, guiding force. As he pores over the ideas—ranging from the dangers of unchecked mechanistic power to the perils of both absolute monarchy and forced equality—the marquis confronts a vision of society that demands liberty and gradual reform.

From this intellectual spark, the story follows the marquis as he wrestles with the practical implications of the manuscript’s call for a liberated “plebe.” He navigates the suspicions of officials, the ambitions of artists, and the restless stirrings of the masses, all while trying to shape a new political framework that respects individual freedom. The novel captures the tension between entrenched authority and emerging collective will, setting the stage for a decisive struggle that will test the limits of both power and conscience.
