PERSONNAGES
ACTE PREMIER.
Set against the sun‑lit gardens of the Neapolitan vice‑roy, the opera opens with a lavish procession that masks simmering unrest. The audience meets Alphonse, heir to the duc d’Arcos, whose triumphant vows are haunted by remorse for the mute fisher‑girl Fenella, the sister of the fiery Masaniello. Around them, courtiers, soldiers, and the hopeful chorus weave a tapestry of duty, love, and the uneasy tension between the ruling elite and the oppressed populace.
From the first notes of the choir, the music by Daniel François Aubert amplifies the clash of public celebration and private guilt. Alphonse’s conflicted soliloquies reveal a man torn between his upcoming marriage to the noble Elvire and the secret promises he has broken. As the chorus swells, whispers of rebellion begin to stir, hinting at the larger struggle that will soon erupt beyond the palace walls, inviting listeners to feel the pulse of a city on the brink.
