Description

A modest ramshackle shelter hides among towering pines and tamarix on the rocky fringe of a quiet bay, its white broom‑thatched roof spilling fragrant smoke into the salty air. The narrator describes the garden of yuccas, agaves and a bright ficus‑like plant whose blossoms flash yellow or scarlet against verdant leaves, creating a tiny oasis that feels both exposed and protected when the sea wind blows. From this perch the sounds of distant warships stir an uneasy contrast between the tranquil landscape and the looming machinery of battle.

Below the shelter two young men lie on the sand, a university‑bound professor and a recuperating sailor, trading remarks about the sleek ironclads that have entered the bay. Their banter mixes admiration for the ships’ grandeur with a subtle critique of their intrusion on the natural harmony of the coast. As the narrator listens, the scene becomes a meditation on how human ambition and the spectacle of power ripple through an otherwise simple, sun‑kissed life.
