Description

A young man recounts his early years in a remote Russian outpost, where his retired officer father strives to raise him with the discipline of the army and the refinements of a cultured household. Under the watchful eye of a stern caretaker and a well‑meaning but inebriated French tutor, he learns to read, write, and even fly a kite made from a forgotten map. Their friendship, mixed with language lessons and occasional mischief, offers a glimpse of a world where Russian tradition meets Western curiosity.

When his father finally loses patience with the drunken tutor, the household is shaken, and the boy is left to navigate the streets, rooftops, and games of his small community alone. At sixteen, a subtle shift in his life hints at larger forces gathering beyond the estate’s walls—military duties, family expectations, and the looming changes of a restless era. The story promises a vivid portrait of childhood on the brink of adulthood, set against the backdrop of 19th‑century Russia’s stark beauty and harsh realities.
