The play opens in a cramped, cluttered back‑room of a pawn‑shop‑type house, where the walls are lined with ledgers, silverware and worn furniture. Sr. Batista, a middle‑aged man in a threadbare waistcoat, presides over the makeshift office, surrounded by his wife Caterina, his sister Tulia and her husband Farnell, as well as a witty young clerk named Batistet. Their rapid dialogue mixes jokes about “duros” and the ticking clock with a sober acknowledgment that many families rely on this place to survive.
As the clerk counts coins and a servant brings in a set of silver cups, the conversation hints at hidden loyalties and the thin line between generosity and exploitation. The characters’ banter reveals a community bound by pride, debt, and a shared desire to keep their dignity, while a mysterious lady’s brief appearance adds an undercurrent of intrigue. Listeners are drawn into the brisk, vernacular rhythm that captures Barcelona’s working‑class life in the early 1900s.
