A leading figure of Catalan modernisme, this Barcelona-born artist moved easily between painting, writing, and theater. He is especially remembered for atmospheric gardens, city scenes, and a lively cultural presence that helped shape modern Catalan art.

by Santiago Rusiñol
Born in Barcelona on February 25, 1861, he became one of the best-known voices of Catalan modernisme. Although he came from an industrial family, he chose an artistic life and built a career that reached across painting, poetry, journalism, collecting, and playwriting.
His years in Paris were especially important, helping connect Catalan culture with wider European artistic trends. Along with friends such as Ramon Casas, he became part of the generation that brought new ideas and a modern urban spirit into the art of Catalonia.
He created a large body of work, and his paintings of gardens, patios, and quiet outdoor spaces remain among his most admired images. He died in Aranjuez on June 13, 1931, leaving behind a reputation not just as a painter, but as a central cultural figure of his time.
