Born in Barcelona in 1861, Santiago Rusiñol became one of the central figures of the Catalan Modernisme movement. He was not only a novelist and playwright, but also a painter, poet, journalist, and collector, which gave his writing an unusual richness and range.
Rusiñol spent important years in Paris and moved easily between literature and the visual arts. His work often mixed humor, social observation, and a sensitive eye for beauty, helping him connect with a wide audience in both Catalan and Spanish.
He remained a major cultural presence until his death in Aranjuez in 1931. Today he is remembered as a many-sided artist whose writing and drama played a lasting part in the story of modern Catalan literature.
