Best known as the writer behind the beloved Finnish song “Karjalan kunnailla,” this poet and translator also had an unusually wide-ranging life, from land surveying to adult education and scholarship. His work helped bring both Finnish poetry and translated literature to new readers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
