About the author

Born as Valter Henrik Juvelius in Pyhäjoki on September 3, 1865, he wrote under the name Valter Juva and also used the pen name Heikki Kenttä. He was a Finnish poet, writer, and translator, and he belonged to an early generation of educated Finns who were schooled in Finnish and worked to expand the language's literary range.

Juva translated a large amount of world literature into Finnish over more than three decades. Alongside that work, he published his own poetry and became especially well known for the poem Karjalan kunnailla lehtii puu, which remained his most widely remembered piece.

He died in Viipuri on December 25, 1922. Today, he is remembered both as a poet in his own right and as a cultural bridge who helped Finnish readers encounter major works from abroad.
