About the author

Born in Pyhäjoki on September 3, 1865, Valter Juva was the pen name of Valter Henrik Juvelius. He was a Finnish writer and translator whose work ranged across poetry, fiction, and literary translation.

Juva is especially remembered for the poem "Karjalan kunnailla," which became widely known in Finland. Alongside his own writing, he translated a large amount of world literature into Finnish, helping readers encounter major authors from beyond Finland in their own language.

He published poetry collections and prose works and also wrote under the pseudonym Heikki Kenttä. Juva died in Vyborg on December 25, 1922, leaving a body of work that links original Finnish writing with a deep commitment to translation.
