Mr. John Greatorex is a self‑assured industrialist who prides himself on mastering anything he touches, even if he knows little about the subject. Fresh from the factory floor, he insists on testing his brand‑new motor‑car alone, treating the ride like a child's first toy. Pride quickly turns to panic when the engine sputters and stalls on a quiet country bridge, leaving him stranded in a cloud of mud and frustration.
The only witness is a solitary boy fishing nearby, whose patience with his line is broken only by the odd noises from the wrecked vehicle. When Greatorex begs for a local smith, the boy cheekily offers to fix the car himself, prompting a sudden burst of laughter that diffuses the tension. Their unlikely meeting hints at a series of eccentric escapades that will test Greatorex’s confidence in ways far beyond the road.

Behind this pen name were two Oxford University Press editors who teamed up to write brisk, imaginative adventure stories for young readers. Their books mixed history, empire-era action, and schoolboy daring, and they became a familiar part of early 20th-century British children's fiction.
