Description

A young English squire, restless and eager for purpose, finds himself drawn into the tumultuous world of mid‑18th‑century India. After an unexpected encounter with Colonel Robert Clive in a modest English court, he is whisked away to the “Golden East,” where the glitter of distant courts masks a landscape of rivalries, intrigue, and looming war. Along the ragged coasts and bustling bazaars he meets a colourful cast—ambitious merchants, a learned Babu, and seasoned sailors—each offering a glimpse of the complex tapestry that underpins British ambitions abroad.

As the squire settles into the service of the East India Company, his first real test arrives with the capture of a strategic fort and the shadow of a looming confrontation at Plassey. Through storm‑tossed seas, mutinous crews, and uneasy alliances, he learns that honor, courage, and quick wits are as vital as any weapon. The narrative blends vivid historical detail with the personal growth of a man thrust from genteel England into the heart of a fierce, unfamiliar world.

Herbert Strang

A classic name in British boys’ adventure fiction, this was actually a shared pen name used by two Oxford University Press editors. Their stories mixed fast-moving action with history, travel, and the imperial imagination of the early 20th century.
