Description

In a tastefully furnished Helsinki drawing‑room, a flamboyant gentleman in a fresh court uniform confides in his wise‑cracking uncle. The elder, half‑jester, half‑mentor, listens as his nephew frets about an impending encounter with a young lieutenant. Their banter is peppered with colourful metaphors, references to Turkish customs, and a flurry of anxieties about honor, love and the passage of time. The stage is alive with smoking pipes, a looming wardrobe, and the ticking clock that pushes the drama forward.

The heart of the scene is the gentleman’s dread that the lieutenant’s visit will stir dormant feelings—both for his devoted wife and for his own fading vigor. As the uncle nudges him toward honesty, the audience watches a comic clash of pride and vulnerability unfold. The dialogue crackles with wit, exposing the absurd lengths people go to preserve reputation. It promises a light‑hearted yet insightful glimpse into mid‑nineteenth‑century social mores, before the plot can truly set its sights on resolution.
