Description

A young naval officer sets off from Charlestown in the winter of 1850, eager to leave behind the bustle of Boston for the open ocean. The voyage begins smoothly, with a favorable wind and the promise of a clean offing, though a few crew members grapple with the inevitable sea‑sickness. As the ship drifts southward, the crew watches distant vessels appear and vanish on the horizon, sharing quiet speculation about their destinations while the equatorial line looms ahead.

Crossing that invisible boundary, they encounter the stark, desolate islets of Saint Paul—tiny rock formations that bear the haunting memory of a long‑ago shipwreck. The narrator records meticulous observations of the sea, the sky, and the relentless sun, capturing both the awe and the underlying tension of life on board. These early days set the tone for a journey that will test endurance, curiosity, and the camaraderie of a crew far from home.
