Description

In the restless years after the French Revolution, a bright boy grows up under the shadow of his father's shifting fortunes. Raised in a household where discipline clashes with a mother's harshness, he endures the brutal regime of a provincial school while secretly devouring books and scribbling verses that never see the light of day. The narrative follows his curiosity as he moves to Paris, enters the world of legal apprenticeships, and declares with youthful certainty that he will become a writer, despite his father's skeptical warning that the path leads only to kings or lawyers.

Set against the bustling streets and attic rooms of 19th‑century Paris, his attempts at drama and novel‑making meet with indifference and sharp criticism from family and acquaintances. Yet each dismissal fuels his resolve, and he throws himself into the literary currents of Scott, Byron and Chateaubriand, seeking a voice that might break free from his dependence on his parents. The first act paints a vivid portrait of ambition, hardship, and the fierce yearning to carve an independent identity through the written word.
