About the author
Born in Tours on May 20, 1799, and based for much of his working life in Paris, Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. He pursued literature with extraordinary energy, producing novels, stories, and essays that explored the pressures of social class, family, love, ambition, and financial power.
Balzac is best known for La Comédie humaine, an ambitious series of interconnected works populated by recurring characters and set across different levels of French society. Among his celebrated novels are Père Goriot, Eugénie Grandet, Cousin Bette, and Lost Illusions.
His detailed realism and interest in everyday social life helped shape the modern novel. Balzac died in Paris on August 18, 1850, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest French novelists of all time.
