About the author

Born in Tours in 1799, Honoré de Balzac became one of the most influential novelists of the 19th century. After trying law and business, he committed himself to writing and produced an astonishing body of work about ambition, money, love, power, and social climbing in post-Revolutionary France.

His great achievement was La Comédie humaine, a large linked sequence of novels and stories featuring recurring characters across many books. That design gave his fiction an unusual sense of scale and continuity, and it let him explore French society from many angles, from aristocrats and bankers to artists, clerks, and criminals.

Balzac died in 1850, but his influence has lasted far beyond his own era. Readers still come to him for sharp observation, memorable characters, and a world that feels busy, human, and startlingly alive.
