KANTOPÄÄN LUKUHUONEELLA
VÄINÖ KATAJA
In the rustic heart of early‑1900s Perä‑Pohjola, the Kantopää family runs a spacious cottage that doubles as the village’s impromptu reading room. Father Heikki tends the fire while his children, Sanna and Iikka, pore over newspapers, swapping gossip about the latest triumphs of the “buuer” and the arrival of a mysterious immigrant, Hanhiojan Salkko. Their conversations reveal a community eager for news, education, and the excitement of new ideas.
When Olli, a travelling timber merchant, arrives with a bundle of promised books from Helsinki, the household sees a chance to turn the humble reading room into a proper library for the whole village. Together with neighbors such as the diligent Enomatti and the lively village youth, they begin to organize a reading society that could reshape life in their isolated settlement. The first act captures the bustling preparation, the hopeful chatter, and the budding sense of collective purpose that sets the stage for deeper ambitions and unexpected challenges ahead.
