AIRISELÄN TUKINAJOSSA
VÄINÖ KATAJA
The frozen surface of Ahvenjärvi had turned into a solid road, the ice thick enough to carry even the heaviest sleds. Antti, a solitary fisherman who has spent two decades on the lake’s edge, sets out before dawn with a packed bag, driven by a rumor brought by Kettu‑Iisakki: the renowned hunt‑leader Vänttinen is coming to organize a great “tukinajo” in Airiselä. The biting cold and endless white landscape make his journey feel like a test of will, but the promise of a chance to prove himself pushes him onward.
In the small village, smoke drifts from the lone tavern as Antti is greeted by a stout host who offers him shelter and the latest gossip. He learns that the upcoming “valta‑ajo” will draw men from far and wide, and that Vänttinen demands only sober, steadfast participants. The murmurs of excitement and nervous anticipation paint a vivid picture of a community on the brink of a momentous winter ritual, and Antti hopes his visit will finally earn him a word with the enigmatic leader.
