A weary prisoner faces his last days in Oulu’s county jail, where a cold‑hearted governor, his eyes hollow and skin as pallid as opium smoke, watches in silence. When the sentence is carried out, he is stripped of his uniform, forced into a rough prison coat, and sent on a grim train ride toward the remote outpost of Shpalernaja. The journey is a blur of oppressive heat and the distant hum of summer, echoing the narrator’s own swelling unrest.

Upon arrival, the stark landscape of Shpalernaja presses in like a stone wall, and the protagonist meets Axel Fabian af Enehjelm, a scheming official whose cruel smile hides a web of manipulation and fear. Through terse exchanges and an atmosphere heavy with watchful guards, the newcomer begins to piece together the harsh reality of life under an unyielding regime.
