VIHTORI NIEMI
A modestly staged one‑act drama unfolds in a cramped working‑class household at the turn of the twentieth century. Inside a sparsely furnished room, Salu the factory labourer, his wife Sanna, their young daughter Sulo and their servant Siina wrestle with daily survival, while the dialogue drifts into heated debates about debt, honesty and the moral weight of Christian teachings. The play’s language is plain yet incisive, capturing the tension between the need to provide for one’s family and the uneasy conscience that questions whether borrowing, pawning, or even modest profit can ever be truly just.
Through sharp, often uncomfortable exchanges, the characters expose how poverty forces people into moral compromises, while also hinting at the broader social forces that keep them trapped. The voices of Sanna and Siina, in particular, illuminate conflicting views on duty, generosity and the thin line between necessity and greed, setting the stage for a compelling portrait of life‑and‑work in an industrial Finnish town.
