On a sweltering June morning a young woman boards a rattling prairie train, her blue serge skirt trailing a heavy satchel that seems as unfamiliar with travel as she is. The cramped car feels like a moving cage, the stale air and endless horizon pressing on her thoughts of home and the unknown road ahead. As the locomotive coughs and lurches toward the open plains, she clings to the hope that each stop will bring a glimpse of the life she left behind.
The journey introduces her to a cast of restless passengers—a talkative porter, a fellow traveler named Mary, and other strangers whose worries echo the vast, indifferent landscape. Together they watch the prairie roll by, a sea of golden grasses and distant cactus blooms that both mesmerize and intimidate. Their conversations hint at upcoming challenges: a post office to run, a trail of horse‑thieves, and the promise of a new community waiting beyond the endless horizon.
