Description

A striking Finnish reworking of the 15th‑century morality play Everyman, this drama opens in a timeless, allegorical realm where divine forces and human vices clash. God, the archangel Michael, Death, and a host of symbolic figures step onto the stage to stage a cautionary tableau about pride, wealth, and the inevitability of judgment. The language blends solemn prayer with vivid everyday detail, setting a tone that is simultaneously reverent and sharply comic.

When the curtain rises, God commands Death to summon Jokamies, a pompously wealthy landowner who revels in his opulent mansion, overflowing pantries, and boundless servants. He is urged to begin a pilgrimage of penance, a journey for which he has never prepared, and his complacent friend and a poor neighbor appear to plead for mercy. The audience watches Jokamies wrestle with the sudden summons, his ego bruised by the prospect of giving up comfort, as the play unfolds an urgent moral lesson about the transient nature of riches.
