Description

Ensign Jack Steel spends his spare moments whittling on the deck of a massive carrier, letting the rhythm of the shavings match the steady hum of the ship’s engines. He’s a young scout pilot with dreams of flying a dive bomber, buoyed by the camaraderie of his shipmates and the crisp, salty air of the mid‑Pacific. When Lieutenant Commander Donald Stone invites him up to the bridge, Jack’s curiosity spikes, and he marvels at the sprawling task force silhouetted against a moonless night. The scene is a blend of disciplined routine and quiet anticipation, each creak of the steel and flash of distant lights hinting at something larger on the horizon.

Below the surface, tensions rise as the fleet edges deeper into enemy waters, and a faint, almost imperceptible whistling drifts across the deck. Jack senses that the calm may be a prelude to a sudden, unseen danger, and his mind begins to wander between the safety of familiar routines and the unknown that lurks ahead. The mystery that hovers over the black sea promises a test of skill, courage, and the quick thinking that only a whittling‑handed scout could provide.
