Description

A loving grandmother’s letter opens the tale, promising a story that will make the boy both laugh and groan. Set in 1920 France, fourteen‑year‑old Jean prepares to leave his quiet village for the bustling streets of Paris. The illustrated prose captures his mother’s and aunt’s worries while hinting at the adventure ahead.

Jean’s departure is a quiet drama of love and fear; his mother Hélène tries to cloak her tears with prayers, urging him to be brave like his older brother Simon. As he walks away, the road seems both familiar and foreboding, and his thoughts turn to the protective saints he has been taught to invoke. The scene is rich with the bittersweet mix of youthful courage and maternal anxiety.

The first act sets a gentle rhythm, alternating between tender domestic moments and the anticipation of city life. Illustrations by H. Castelli lend a nostalgic charm, while the dialogue feels authentic to early‑twentieth‑century France. Listeners will find themselves rooting for Jean as he steps onto a path that promises both challenges and the possibility of new, unexpected friendships.
