JANET OR THE CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS
I
II
In the crowded tenements of late‑nineteenth‑century New York, a bright‑eyed girl named Janet darts through the icy streets, her tattered gown barely keeping the chill at bay. When a well‑dressed gentleman—later revealed as the Bishop—spares her a few pennies after seeing her dance for warmth, he promises a special surprise if she comes to the church on Christmas Eve. Filled with a mix of hunger and hope, Janet clutches the coin and shares it with her friend Roy, the newsboy who first noticed her glittering new stockings.
On the night of the holiday service, Janet slips into the grand cathedral and is stunned by a towering Christmas tree lit with countless candles and draped with sparkling toys. The Bishop appears, smiling, and hands her a pair of fine stockings, each knotted with a blue ribbon, stuffed with candy and a silver dollar tucked in the toe. He blesses her gently, urging her to keep pure, while the young girl clutches her treasure close, feeling for the first time that the season might bring a little magic into her life.
