Description

Jack Ranger is the kind of student who draws a crowd wherever he goes—quick with a joke, steady with a paddle, and always up for a challenge. When a brash senior dares him to a row on Rudmore Lake, the whole school lines the shore, cheering and betting on who will hold the lead. The race bursts into action with a crack of a pistol, oars slicing the water, and a lively clash of personalities that sets the tone for the friendships and rivalries that will shape his year.

Victorious but hungry for more, Jack turns his energy toward the newly formed Gun Club, where he learns the basics of marksmanship and the value of teamwork. Field trips take the boys into the woods, across criss‑crossed trails, and onto crisp campsites, offering a mix of daring practice and quiet camaraderie. Along the way, Jack discovers that the real target isn’t just bullseyes, but the confidence and character forged in the great outdoors.

About the author

Clarence Young

Best known for fast-moving boys' adventure stories, this name was actually a Stratemeyer Syndicate house pseudonym rather than a single writer. It became most closely linked with the popular Motor Boys books and other early 20th-century series built around travel, gadgets, and action.
