Jack Treby grows up on a remote South African farm, a wide, sun‑baked veld where the nearest neighbor is twenty miles away. His English father, a recent immigrant, fills their simple homestead with stories of a distant island, while a kindly Hottentot woman and the local Kafir workers make up the little community around them. Though the land is harsh, Jack learns toughness, patience, and an instinct for the land from the long talks he has with his father at dusk. The boy’s world is a blend of dusty plains, swaying cacti, and the quiet rhythm of farm life.
Despite his isolation, Jack’s imagination reaches across oceans. He spends evenings tracing the counties of England on a map, proudly crossing out Nottingham where his grandfather still lives, hoping to keep the distant home alive in his mind. His father encourages the habit, promising that each erased line will become a memory. When a wandering ostrich appears, Jack’s curiosity and courage are put to test, setting stage for a friendship that will carry him beyond the borders of the veld.
