Description

A fresh graduate arrives in the bustling streets of 19th‑century Kiev, his senses overwhelmed by the clamor of market day and the glitter of merchants, soldiers, and scholars. The young Yosef Shvarts, coming from a small town and a blacksmith’s family, breathes in the city’s energy and marvels at the promise of university life. As he wanders, a familiar voice summons him, and he is drawn into the cramped lodgings of a fellow student, Gustav, whose sharp wit and weary health hint at the hardships of student existence.

Gustav, already a year into his studies, shares stark advice about the perils of hasty choices and the relentless grind of books, while also offering a place to stay and a glimpse of the camaraderie that can sustain a scholar. Through their conversation, listeners catch a vivid portrait of student life in a vibrant yet unforgiving metropolis—crowded rooms, scarce money, and the constant tug between ambition and survival. The opening sets the stage for a tale of youthful idealism confronting the gritty reality of an ancient city’s academic world.
