Description

Set in a richly furnished Helsinki salon of the 1880s, the play opens with the quiet tension of a Sunday afternoon. Two young women, the diligent piano student Ella and her sardonic mentor Miss Moilanen, linger by a newly‑acquired grand piano, swapping observations about the household’s demanding assessor, Raunion, and the pressures of maintaining appearances. Their banter, laced with both humor and fatigue, reveals a world where personal ambition collides with societal expectations.

Through carefully drawn dialogues, the drama sketches a cast of eager parents, weary clerks, and curious neighbors, each navigating the delicate balance between duty and desire. As the characters weave their modest concerns—financial strain, the grind of bureaucracy, and the longing for a restful Sunday—the audience catches a vivid portrait of fin‑de‑siècle Finnish life, where even a simple piano can become a symbol of status, strain, and fleeting joy.
